Framer, Shopify, Astro or Next.js? A Plain-English Platform Guide

You do not need to understand the technology behind your site, but it helps to know why a builder picks one tool over another. Here are four I use, in plain language.

Framer

A visual design tool that publishes polished sites quickly. Good for: marketing sites and portfolios where look and feel matter and the content changes occasionally.

Shopify

A platform built for selling physical products, with carts, checkout, inventory and shipping handled for you. Good for: shops. If you are selling things people receive in the mail, start here.

Astro

A framework that produces very fast, lightweight pages. Good for: content-heavy sites such as blogs, guides and service sites where speed and search visibility count.

Next.js

A framework for building more complex, interactive web apps: logins, dashboards, custom features. Good for: projects that need to do things, not just show things.

How the choice gets made

  1. What does the site need to do? Show information, sell products, or run an app?
  2. Who will update it, and how often?
  3. How fast and how findable does it need to be?
  4. What is the budget for building and care?

The honest answer

For many small businesses, more than one tool would work. The right choice is the one that is simple to maintain and fits the next two years, not the most impressive on a spec sheet. During your discovery call, I will recommend what fits, and explain why.
