For many small businesses, most visitors find the site on a phone, often while standing somewhere else with one hand free. If your site is awkward on a small screen, you lose people quietly. Here is a five-minute test.
Before you start
Use your own phone on mobile data (not just Wi-Fi), and open the site as a stranger would: from a search or a link, not a bookmark.
The checklist
- Does the first screen explain what you do? You should not need to scroll to understand it.
- Can you read the text without zooming? Body text should be comfortably readable.
- Can you tap every button easily? Tiny links close together cause misses.
- Does the menu open and close properly?
- Do images load quickly and fit the screen?
- Is your phone number tappable? One tap should start a call.
- Does your contact form work with a thumb? Fill it in and send it.
- Does anything jump around while loading? Shifting layouts are frustrating.
Fix first
If you can only fix three things, fix these: the headline on the first screen, the main call-to-action button, and the contact method.
Test more than one device
If you can, look at the site on an older phone, a tablet and a different browser. Problems often hide on devices you do not own.
